Miches Travel Guide (2026): Getting There, Where to Stay, What to Do
Why Miches is being called the next Punta Cana, how to get there from PUJ, and which of the new resorts fits your trip
For decades Miches was the place you drove past on a map: a small town on the far side of the mountains from Punta Cana, facing Samaná Bay, with some of the longest empty beaches in the country. That has changed quickly. Club Med opened in 2019, and since late 2024 five more big all-inclusives have followed. Travel trade press now routinely calls it “the next Punta Cana”.
Here is what that means for you, and whether it is the right base for your trip.
The short version: Fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) and allow about 1.5 hours to the Costa Esmeralda resorts. Miches is for travelers who want a big, quiet beach, mountains in the view and less sargassum, and who are happy to stay on the resort most days. If you want nightlife, golf, lots of restaurants or a 20-minute transfer, stay in Punta Cana and visit Miches on a day trip.
Why Miches is being called the next Punta Cana
Three things came together.
The road. The Bávaro to Uvero Alto to Miches highway, opened in stages from late 2014, turned a long, winding trip into a straightforward coast drive. It cut Miches down to roughly 1.5 hours from Punta Cana airport and made big resort development possible.
The government push. The Dominican government has made Miches a priority destination, and President Luis Abinader has attended several of the resort openings, including Viva Miches and the Secrets and Dreams pair.
The beaches. The coast east of town, known as the Costa Esmeralda, has long, palm-backed beaches with the Cordillera Oriental rising right behind them. Because they face north into Samaná Bay, they get far less sargassum than Punta Cana’s east coast.
The result is about 2,900 resort rooms open across six properties as of 2026, with more announced. That is still a small fraction of Punta Cana, so Miches remains quiet, but it is no longer empty.
Getting there
Fly into Punta Cana (PUJ)
Almost everyone flies into Punta Cana International Airport. See our getting there guide for flights, the DGM eTicket and arrival tips. There is no commercial airport in Miches.
Drive times
- PUJ to the Costa Esmeralda resorts: about 1.5 hours
- PUJ to Miches town: about 1.5 to 2 hours (roughly 95 to 100 km)
- Bávaro or Uvero Alto to Montaña Redonda: about an hour or a little more
- Miches town to Sabana de la Mar: about an hour along the coast road
- Santo Domingo (SDQ) to Miches: about 2.5 hours via El Seibo or Hato Mayor, on more winding roads
The route from Punta Cana runs north past Uvero Alto, through farmland and the village of El Cedro, past Playa Limón and Montaña Redonda, then along the coast to the resorts and town. The road is paved and in generally good shape, but it is a two-lane highway with trucks, motorbikes and the occasional cow. Avoid driving it at night if you can.
Transfers and other options
- Resort transfer: most Miches packages include or offer one. This is the easiest choice after a flight.
- Private transfer: reported at roughly $100 to $150 one way in 2025. Book ahead; airport taxis cost more.
- Rental car: a good idea if you want to explore Playa Limón, Montaña Redonda and the lagoons on your own. A car with some clearance helps on rural access roads after rain.
- Public bus: a bus has run from the Sitrabapu station in Punta Cana a few times a day. It is cheap but slow and only practical with light luggage and some Spanish. Check current times locally.
Where to stay
Costa Esmeralda resorts
This is where most visitors stay. There is no town here, just resorts along the coast road, so plan on staying on property most of the time.
- Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda: the original, open since November 2019. Four boutique villages, including an adults-only Zen Oasis, and top-tier kids’ clubs. Best for families and active couples.
- Secrets Playa Esmeralda: adults-only, 500 suites, opened August 2025. Best for couples and honeymooners.
- Dreams Playa Esmeralda: the family sister to Secrets, with a water park and three pools, opened September 2025. Guests can use both resorts.
- Zemi Miches: Hilton’s Curio Collection all-inclusive, opened mid-2025. Plunge-pool suites, beach bungalows and the most design-led look on the coast.
- Viva Miches by Wyndham: opened December 2024, the value pick, with more than 500 rooms and a lively family atmosphere.
Miches town
Marriott Miches Beach sits at the edge of Miches town on Playa Arriba, in the building that was once the Temptation resorts. It has a family section with a water park and a separate adults-only section, and you can walk into town. Independent travelers can also find small hotels and guesthouses in town, but standards are basic and English is limited.
What is coming
Announced projects include a Paradisus resort by Meliá with Grupo Puntacana, a JW Marriott and an Autograph Collection hotel on Playa Esmeralda, and a Four Seasons at the Tropicalia development east of town, which the developer has pushed back to around 2027. None of these were open as of late 2026. Be wary of package sites that list them as bookable.
The beaches
- Playa Esmeralda: the headline beach. Long, pale sand, palms, mountains behind, usually calm. Home to Club Med, Secrets and Dreams.
- Carlyle Cove: a smaller, greener stretch between town and Esmeralda, where Viva Miches and Zemi sit.
- Playa Arriba: the town beach. Local life, fishing boats, sunsets.
- Playa Limón: three wild kilometers near El Cedro. Rough water, great for horseback rides and photos.
A word on the water: this is the Atlantic, inside a big bay, with no barrier reef like the one that shelters Bávaro Beach. On calm days it is lovely to swim. On windy days it gets choppy, and there are no lifeguards on public beaches. Rivers also drain into the bay, so water near river mouths turns cloudy after heavy rain.
What to do
- Montaña Redonda: the famous round hill with swings and 360-degree views over the lagoons and Samaná Bay. Go early.
- Laguna Limón kayak tour: an easy paddle through mangroves in the Lagunas Redonda y Limón reserve, from around $40.
- Laguna Limón horseback and boat tour: ride Playa Limón and cross the lagoon by boat. A full countryside day.
- Salto de la Jalda: a long hike or ride to a waterfall of around 120 meters in the hills behind town. For fit adventurers with a local guide.
- Los Haitises and Samaná: boats into Los Haitises National Park and the passenger ferry across the bay to Samaná leave from Sabana de la Mar, about an hour west of Miches. From the Costa Esmeralda this is a much shorter day than from Punta Cana.
What Miches does not have: golf, nightlife, big shopping, or a dense restaurant scene. If those matter, see our off-the-resort guide for Punta Cana instead.
Best time to visit
Miches has the same tropical climate as Punta Cana: warm all year, with the driest, most comfortable weather from December to April. That is also high season, when prices peak. Rain picks up from May, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. For more, see our best time to visit guide.
The Miches advantage is summer. From roughly March to October, when sargassum can hit Punta Cana’s east-facing beaches hard, Miches’ north-facing beaches usually stay much clearer. See the sargassum guide for how the seaweed season works.
Practical tips
- Cash: carry Dominican pesos for Montaña Redonda, local tours, taxis and small restaurants. Banks and ATMs are in Miches town rather than on the Costa Esmeralda.
- Language: outside the resorts, Spanish is the norm. A translation app helps with menus.
- Taxis: resorts can call one. Agree on the price before you get in.
- Medical care: Medical facilities in Miches are limited. For anything serious, the private hospitals in Bávaro and Punta Cana are 1.5 hours away; buy travel insurance that includes evacuation.
- Bugs: bring repellent, especially for the lagoons and at dusk.
Miches or Punta Cana?
Choose Miches if you want a newer resort, a long and quiet beach, mountain views and lower sargassum risk, and you are happy to trade a longer transfer for that. Choose Punta Cana if you want a short transfer, more restaurants and nightlife, golf, and calm reef-protected water. Many travelers split the difference: stay in Uvero Alto, the closest part of Punta Cana, and spend a day at Montaña Redonda and Playa Limón.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Miches from Punta Cana airport?
Miches is roughly 95 to 100 km from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). The drive takes about 1.5 hours to the Costa Esmeralda resorts and 1.5 to 2 hours to Miches town, on the Bávaro to Uvero Alto to Miches highway along the coast.
Which resorts are open in Miches in 2026?
Six big all-inclusives are open: Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda (since 2019), Viva Miches by Wyndham (December 2024), Marriott Miches Beach (early 2025, in the former Temptation building), Zemi Miches Curio Collection by Hilton (mid-2025), Secrets Playa Esmeralda (August 2025) and Dreams Playa Esmeralda (September 2025). Temptation Miches closed in January 2024. Paradisus Miches, a JW Marriott and a Four Seasons are announced but not open.
Does Miches have sargassum?
Much less than Punta Cana in most years. The Miches beaches face north and northwest into Samaná Bay rather than east into the open Atlantic, so they catch far less of the seaweed that drifts in between roughly March and October. More exposed beaches such as Playa Limón see some.
Is Miches better than Punta Cana?
It depends on what you want. Miches has quieter, emptier beaches, mountains behind the coast, newer resorts and less sargassum. Punta Cana has a much shorter airport transfer, far more restaurants, nightlife, golf and excursions, and reef-protected water. Miches suits couples and families who plan to stay on the resort and want calm; Punta Cana suits travelers who want options.
Can I visit Miches as a day trip from Punta Cana?
Yes. Tours to Montaña Redonda run about 4.5 hours from Punta Cana with hotel pickup, and full-day trips add Playa Limón and Laguna Limón. From Uvero Alto the drive is noticeably shorter than from Bávaro or Cap Cana.
Is the water at Playa Esmeralda safe for swimming?
On many days it is calm and easy to swim, but it is open bay water with no protective reef, and there are no lifeguards on public stretches. Check conditions, follow resort flags and stay away from river mouths after rain. Playa Limón further east is rougher and better for walking than swimming.
