Playa Arriba (Miches town beach)
The everyday town beach of Miches, where fishing boats and local life share the sand
A smaller, greener stretch between Miches town and Playa Esmeralda
Carlyle Cove is the stretch of coast between Playa Arriba and Playa Esmeralda, a few kilometers east of Miches town. The Dominican tourism ministry describes it as roughly halfway to Esmeralda and as a good alternative for people who do not want to make the full trip out. Vegetation comes right down to the sand, and the beach feels more enclosed and intimate than the long open sweep of Esmeralda.
It is also where some of the new building has happened. Viva Miches by Wyndham opened on this part of the coast in December 2024, and Zemi Miches sits at its eastern end where it runs into Playa Esmeralda. That means more people on the sand than a few years ago, but away from the resort fronts it is still quiet.
The water is part of the same bay system: often calm, sometimes choppy when the trade winds blow, and with no protective reef. It is not a reliable snorkeling beach, and the water can be cloudier after rain because of the rivers that drain into this part of the bay. As everywhere on this coast, check conditions before swimming and stay out near river mouths after storms.
Getting there: from town, the Río Jovero mouth separates Carlyle Cove from Playa Arriba, so walking across is not always possible. Most people drive or take a taxi along the coast road and use one of the access points between the resorts. Horseback rides along the shore from Miches town toward Carlyle Cove are offered locally and are a pleasant way to see this coast. Check the last stretch of road after heavy rain, since secondary tracks can turn to mud.
Facilities are limited to what the resorts offer their guests. There are no public restrooms, rental chairs or beach restaurants on the open sections, so bring water and shade.
Sargassum: like the rest of the Miches coast, the beach faces north into Samaná Bay and generally gets much less seaweed than Punta Cana. Some debris washes in from the rivers after storms.
Best for: guests of the resorts on this stretch, travelers based in Miches town who want something calmer than the town beach, and riders on a beach horseback trip. Not for: anyone who needs facilities on the sand. Best time: morning, and the drier months from December to April.
