About Playa Esmeralda

Playa Esmeralda is the beach that put Miches on the map. It runs east from Punta Jayán toward Punta Hicaco on the southern shore of Samaná Bay, a few kilometers east of Miches town, and the name ("emerald beach") comes from the green and turquoise tones the water takes on when the sun is out. The sand is pale and soft, the backdrop is a dense line of coconut palms, and the hills of the Cordillera Oriental rise just inland, which gives it a look you do not get on the flat Punta Cana coast.

For years the only big hotel here was Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, which opened in late 2019. That has changed fast. Secrets Playa Esmeralda and Dreams Playa Esmeralda opened in 2025, and Zemi Miches sits at the western end of the same strip. Even so, the beach is long enough that it still feels open, and stretches between resorts can be close to empty on a weekday.

The water is Atlantic water inside a big bay, not reef-protected Caribbean water. On many days it is calm enough for an easy swim, but wind and swell change by the day and by the section of beach, so look before you go in and follow any flags the resorts put out. There are no lifeguards on the public stretches. Families with small children will find the resort fronts the most comfortable places to swim.

Sargassum is the good news. The beach faces north and northwest into Samaná Bay rather than east into the open Atlantic, and local guides report that it sees far less seaweed than Bávaro Beach during the March to October season. It is not immune, but it is one of the reasons travelers are choosing Miches over Punta Cana in summer.

Access: all Dominican beaches are public by law, but the practical way in is by car or taxi along the coast road from Miches. Public stretches have no formal facilities, so bring water, shade and cash. Resort guests get loungers, bars and towels. There is no town on the beach itself; for local food you drive back to Miches town, about 10 to 15 minutes away.

Sea turtles nest on this coast, and resort staff report nesting from roughly March to November. If you see a marked nest, keep your distance and keep lights off the sand at night.

Best for: couples and families who want a big, quiet beach and are happy to stay put. Not for: travelers who want beach bars, vendors and nightlife within walking distance. Best time: mornings, before the afternoon breeze picks up, and the drier months from December to April.
