Laguna Limón Kayak Tour
An easy paddle through mangroves and channels in the Lagunas Redonda y Limón reserve
About This Activity
Laguna Limón is one of the two lagoons in the Lagunas Redonda y Limón protected area, a coastal reserve east of Miches set aside for its wetlands and birdlife. The Dominican tourism ministry puts the reserve at about 53 square kilometers of largely untouched land. Laguna Limón sits just behind Playa Limón near the village of El Cedro, and its sister, Laguna Redonda, lies a few kilometers west, closer to the Costa Esmeralda. Laguna Redonda is shallow (around 1.4 meters on average) and is the only one of the two connected to the sea, through the Caño Celedonio channel.
The best way to see Laguna Limón is from a kayak. Guided tours from Miches take about 2 hours in total, with roughly an hour on the water. You paddle through mangroves and narrow natural tunnels while the guide talks about the lagoon's ecology and its role for the surrounding villages. The water is flat and sheltered, so it suits beginners and families.
Wildlife is the reward. Herons, egrets and ospreys are common, and the reserve is known for waterbirds such as the least grebe, the common gallinule, the great egret and whistling ducks. On sunny days look for iguanas, crabs and freshwater turtles on the banks.
Price: one widely sold tour from Miches includes hotel pickup, an English and Spanish speaking guide, kayak (single or double) and life jackets, from around $40 per person in 2026. If you are staying on the Costa Esmeralda, the drive to the lagoon is about 30 minutes.
Tips: go in the morning, when it is cooler and birds are most active. Wear clothes that can get wet, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen, and bring insect repellent for the mangroves. Leave valuables at the hotel or bring a dry bag. Do not feed or approach wildlife.
If you would rather see the lagoon from a boat, or combine it with a beach ride, look at the Laguna Limón horseback and boat tour. Pair either one with Montaña Redonda, which looks down on both lagoons.
Best for: nature lovers, birders, families and first-time kayakers. Not for: travelers looking for an adrenaline rush.
