Playa Guayacanes

The local, palm-shaded beach just west of Juan Dolio, known for fried fish and yaniqueques

Playa Guayacanes

About Playa Guayacanes

Guayacanes is the small fishing community and beach a few minutes west of Juan Dolio Beach, and it feels like a step back from the condo towers. There are no big resorts here: just a line of palms, a few houses, a couple of restaurants and the kind of fried fish stands that Dominican families plan their Sundays around. Dominican press regularly lists it among the best beaches near Santo Domingo for exactly that reason.

The water is usually calm and shallow, and there is enough reef close in to make snorkeling worthwhile on clear days; some guides also mention it for scuba diving. The trade-off is that parts of the shoreline are rocky, with coral rubble and stone under the sand at the waterline. Bring water shoes or sandals for getting in and out, and pick a sandy patch before you settle. Shade is easy to find under the palms, which matters in the midday sun.

Food is the main event. Order pescado frito (whole fried fish) with tostones (twice-fried plantains), or grab a yaniqueque, the crispy fried dough sold on beaches along this coast. Prices are local rather than resort level, though it is still wise to confirm the price of fish before it hits the fryer, since it is usually sold by weight.

Crowds are light during the week and moderate on weekends, mostly Dominican families. It is not a party beach and has few services beyond food and drinks, so bring what you need. Sargassum is the main seasonal risk: local reporting in September 2025 noted accumulations here as well as at Boca Chica. See the sargassum guide for how to plan around it.

Getting there: drive east on the Autopista de Las Américas toward San Pedro de Macorís and turn off at the Guayacanes exit, or take a taxi from Juan Dolio in a few minutes. From the capital, allow about 45 minutes outside rush hour. There is informal parking near the restaurants.

Best for: travelers who want a local Dominican beach day, good fried fish and calm water, and snorkelers who do not need a reef trip. Not ideal for: anyone who wants soft sand all the way into the water, lifeguards or full facilities. If you want more services, base yourself in Juan Dolio and come here for lunch.
