Juan Dolio
A long, laid-back coastal strip of condos, beach bars and all-inclusives about 40 minutes from SDQ
About Juan Dolio
Juan Dolio is the quieter beach base east of Boca Chica, about 40 minutes from Las Américas airport and 45 minutes to an hour from the capital. The town is essentially one long coastal boulevard running parallel to Juan Dolio Beach, with high-rise condo towers, older hotels, apartment rentals, beach bars and a scattering of restaurants on either side. It includes the fishing village of Playa Guayacanes to the west, and the surf cove at Playa Caribe is a few minutes beyond.
The pace is slow. On weekdays many stretches of beach are close to empty; on weekends families and friend groups drive out from Santo Domingo, and the beach bars get busier. Many condo owners are Dominicans from the capital or long-stay foreigners, which gives the place a residential feel rather than a resort-zone buzz. There is no nightlife district to speak of: evenings mean dinner by the sea and a drink at a bar.
Where to stay: the two main all-inclusives are Coral Costa Caribe, a family resort renovated in 2023, and Emotions by Hodelpa Juan Dolio, a large Hodelpa property with several pools and restaurants. Condo rentals are plentiful and often good value for longer stays, especially if you want a kitchen. A car is useful here, since things are spread out along the boulevard.
What to do: swim and paddleboard in the calmer stretches, dive local reefs and wrecks with operators in town, play golf at courses nearby, and drive into the capital for a day in the Zona Colonial. Cueva de las Maravillas, a cave with Taíno rock art near La Romana, is also within reach as a day trip.
Trade-offs: the beach is narrower and the sand more golden than white, with rocky patches in places; services are thinner than in Punta Cana; and sargassum can arrive in heavy summers. It is not the Caribbean postcard, but for a calm-water base within an hour of the capital it is hard to beat.
Best for: families, long-stay visitors, couples who want quiet, and travelers combining a city stay with a few beach days.
