Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo
The big family all-inclusive east of Las Terrenas, on a calm stretch of El Portillo beach
About Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo
Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo, known for years as Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo, is the largest all-inclusive near Las Terrenas. It sits on the beach at El Portillo, east of town past Punta Popy, and it is the most straightforward choice in Samaná for families who want the classic all-inclusive formula.
The name change is part of a wider rebrand. Bahia Principe is now run by a joint venture between Hyatt and Grupo Piñero, and its resorts were grouped into sub-brands, with family-focused properties under "Explore." Since March 24, 2026, Bahia Principe hotels have taken part in the World of Hyatt loyalty program, so Hyatt members can earn and use points here. You may still see the old name on older listings and reviews.
It is a big resort for this part of the country: around 600 rooms (Air Canada Vacations lists 606), several pools, roughly seven restaurants and seven bars according to tour operator listings, plus kids' activities and evening entertainment. Room types include junior suites and large family suites, which makes it practical for multi-generational groups.
The beach in front of the resort is one of the gentler stretches on this coast, with loungers, umbrellas and towel service for guests. It still faces the Atlantic, so expect some waves on windy or swell days, and sargassum can arrive in heavy years in late spring and summer. Guest reviews are mixed to positive; aggregate ratings sit a little above 8 out of 10, and families in 2026 reviews report good experiences, while common complaints at large Bahia Principe properties are around food variety and room upkeep. Read recent reviews for the specific building you are booked into.
Location: you are roughly 15 minutes by car from central Las Terrenas, so a taxi into town for dinner at the Pueblo de los Pescadores is easy. Samaná El Catey airport (AZS) is about 45 minutes away. Tour desks on site sell El Limón waterfall, whale watching and Cayo Levantado trips.
Best for: families with kids, multi-generational groups, World of Hyatt members, and first-timers who want an all-inclusive with lots on site. Not ideal for: couples wanting quiet (try Viva V Samana or Bahia Principe Escape Samana), foodies, or travelers who want a boutique feel.
