Las Galeras Beach Boat Trip (Frontón, Madama and Rincón)

Hop between the remote beaches around Las Galeras by small boat from Playa Grande

Las Galeras Beach Boat Trip (Frontón, Madama and Rincón)

About This Activity

The beaches around Las Galeras are some of the best on the peninsula, and several of them are easiest, or only, reachable by sea. A small-boat trip from Playa Grande, the main beach in the village, is the classic way to see them in one go: Playa Frontón for cliffs and snorkeling, Playa Madama for a sheltered cove swim, and often Playa Rincón for the long, palm-lined sand and the cold river at Caño Frío.

How it works: local captains wait on Playa Grande with open fiberglass boats (lanchas). You negotiate the route, the time at each beach and the price directly. Typical trips are a half day, with ride times of roughly 15 to 30 minutes between Las Galeras and Frontón. Some hotels and tour desks in the village arrange the same trips for a set price, which costs a little more but avoids haggling. Guided hikes to Madama and Frontón are an alternative for those who prefer to stay on land.

Prices are informal and change with fuel costs and season. Recent guides suggest roughly $20 to $40 per person for a shared half-day trip covering several beaches, with private boats costing more. Always agree on the total for the whole boat (not just per person) and on the pickup time before you get in, and only pay the full amount at the end.

What to know: these boats are small and the Atlantic side of the cape can be lumpy, especially from December to March when northern swells arrive. Ask for life jackets and make sure there are enough for everyone. Keep phones and cameras in a dry bag. Frontón and Madama have no facilities, so bring water, snacks, sunscreen, snorkel gear and a bag for your trash. If the captain says the sea is too rough for a landing, take his word for it.

Best for: couples, small groups, snorkelers and anyone staying in Las Galeras who wants to see the remote beaches without long hikes. Not ideal for: people prone to seasickness, families with toddlers, or travelers who want a fixed, polished tour product with lunch and an open bar. Go in the morning, when the sea is often calmer and the light is best on the cliffs.
