Playa Madama

About Playa Madama

Playa Madama (sometimes written Playa Madame) is a small cove tucked between rocky headlands and forest east of Las Galeras. It is a fraction of the size of Playa Rincón, and that is the point: a curve of sand, a ring of green and clear water, with often only a handful of people on it.

There are two ways in. The cheaper one is on foot. A motoconcho (motorbike taxi) or taxi takes you to the trailhead a few kilometers east of the village, and from there it is roughly 30 to 40 minutes each way on a forest trail. The trail is not technical, but it can be muddy after rain and there are some uneven sections, so wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops. Guided hikes are sold in Las Galeras and some include a stop at a small cave nearby. The other way is by boat from Playa Grande, usually as one stop on a trip that also goes to Playa Frontón. Boat prices are negotiated with the captains, so confirm the total and the return time before you leave.

Because it sits inside a cove, Madama is usually more sheltered than the open beaches on this coast, and on calm days the water is good for a swim and a look around the rocks with a mask. That said, it still faces the Atlantic. When a big northern swell is running in winter the cove can see surge and the boat landing gets tricky. There are no lifeguards.

There are no facilities at all. No restaurant, no chairs, no restrooms and no shade structures beyond the trees. Pack water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent and a bag for your trash. If you hike, start early so you are walking in the cooler part of the day and arrive before any boat groups.

Sargassum is not a frequent problem in this cove, though small amounts can wash in during heavy seaweed years. The bigger variables are rain (trails get slippery) and sea state.

Best for: couples and small groups who want a quiet swim, hikers, and anyone who has already seen Rincón and wants something smaller. Not ideal for: people with mobility issues, families with toddlers who need facilities, or anyone who wants food on the sand. Pair it with Frontón by boat for a full morning, or hike in and out and be back in Las Galeras for a late lunch.
