Kitesurfing at Buen Hombre
Flat, shallow water and strong trade winds in a remote Montecristi fishing village
About This Activity
Buen Hombre, a fishing village on the Montecristi coast between Montecristi town and Punta Rucia, has become one of the Caribbean's quieter kite destinations. Riders who know Cabarete come here for something different: a vast, shallow, flat-water lagoon behind a reef, steady wind and almost no crowds.
Conditions are the draw. The bay ranges from a few inches to waist deep depending on the tide, so you can stand up almost anywhere, which makes learning fast and freestyle practice easy. Further out, the reef break offers waves for experienced riders. The wind is strongest from about April to September, often 16 to 36 knots, building through the morning; December to February is lighter, and October and November are the rainy months. The local microclimate can make it windier than Cabarete.
Kite Buen Hombre, a kite school and eco-lodge on the beach, has operated here since around 2013. It offers lessons for beginners through advanced riders, boat trips and downwinders, and simple bungalows on the sand with meals. Its training program, led by Dominican kiter Félix Martínez, has produced competitive riders, including a winner at the Salinas Fest kite event in Colombia in 2026. Contact the school directly for current lesson prices and packages; we could not confirm 2026 rates.
Practicalities: there are no kite shops in the village, so bring all your gear and spare parts. The shallow bottom has rocks, sea urchins, sharp shells and sometimes fishing nets, so wear booties. Cash is essential. Access is by road via Villa Vásquez from the Duarte highway, about 3 hours from Cabarete; drive in daylight and download offline maps, as roads have potholes and livestock. Some Cabarete kite schools run organized trips.
In 2026 the beach hosted the first Bike Kite Fest, a nine-day sports and music event from May 30 to June 7. Check whether it is repeated if you want either the party or the peace.
Best for: kiters of all levels, especially beginners who want shallow water and intermediate riders working on tricks. Not for: travelers who want comfort, nightlife or easy access. Read the Playa Buen Hombre beach page, and combine the trip with Montecristi or Punta Rucia.
