Estero Hondo Manatee Sanctuary

Lagoons and mangroves near Punta Rucia where manatees live, with a visitor center and watchtower

Estero Hondo Manatee Sanctuary

About This Activity

The Estero Hondo Marine Mammal Sanctuary (Santuario de Mamíferos Marinos Estero Hondo) protects a system of lagoons and mangroves just east of Punta Rucia, covering about 48 square kilometers. It is one of the most important refuges in the country for the West Indian manatee, a large, slow, plant-eating marine mammal that is vulnerable to boat strikes and habitat loss. Sanctuary guides have reported counts of several dozen manatees in the area.

In March 2024 a visitor center opened at the sanctuary, led by the national environment fund (Fondo MARENA) with support from the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund and the Ministry of Environment. It includes an observation tower, designed so visitors can watch from above without disturbing the animals. Mapping data places the manatee viewpoint at the lagoon edge east of Punta Rucia, toward the village of Estero Hondo.

Set your expectations. Manatees are shy and spend much of their time underwater, so sightings are never guaranteed. Calm, clear mornings give the best chance, when you can spot backs and snouts breaking the surface. Bring binoculars and patience. The mangroves are also good for birds, including herons, egrets and warblers.

Many Cayo Arena tours include a boat run through the mangroves near the sanctuary, and some promise a chance of manatees along the way. Boats should keep their speed down in manatee waters; if your captain does not, ask.

We could not confirm current opening hours or an entry fee for the visitor center. Ask at your hotel in Punta Rucia or check with the Ministry of Environment before you go, and carry small bills in Dominican pesos in case a fee applies.

Getting there: the sanctuary lies along the road east of Punta Rucia toward Estero Hondo, a few minutes' drive from the village. You need a car or a local taxi.

Best for: wildlife lovers, birders, families with patient kids, and a quiet morning before or after Cayo Arena. Not for: travelers expecting a guaranteed encounter or an aquarium-style show. Stay at Punta Rucia Lodge and read the Punta Rucia guide.
