Cayos Siete Hermanos
Seven uninhabited sand cays off Montecristi, a wildlife refuge with shallow snorkeling and nesting seabirds
A tiny sandbar ringed by coral off Punta Rucia, reached by speedboat through the mangroves
Cayo Arena, sold to tourists as Cayo Paraíso or Paradise Island, is the most famous sight on the north-west coast: a sliver of white sand in the middle of the sea, ringed by shallow turquoise water and a coral reef. It is genuinely small. One recent description puts it at roughly 10 by 30 meters, with about seven thatched huts where vendors sell fresh fruit and cold drinks. The size and shape of the sandbar change with currents and seasons.
Almost everyone arrives by speedboat from Punta Rucia or Playa La Ensenada. Depending on the boat and where it leaves from, the crossing takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and most tours add a run through the mangrove channels of the Estero Hondo and Montecristi coast either before or after the cay. Manatees live in these waters, though sightings from a tour boat are a matter of luck. Geographically the cay lies off the Montecristi side of the bay; administratively it is often described as belonging to Estero Hondo in Puerto Plata province.
The water is the whole show. Around the sandbar it is shallow, clear and warm, and a short swim takes you over coral with plenty of colorful fish. Snorkel gear is included on most tours. Stay off the coral and do not stand on it; it is fragile and it is the reason the place exists. Currents can pull around the edges of the bar, so weak swimmers should stay in the shallows.
Crowds are the main trade-off. Cayo Arena is a weekend favorite for Dominican families and the stop for big group tours from Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, so by late morning a tiny cay can feel full. The fix is timing: go on a weekday, and if you are staying in Punta Rucia, leave the beach by about 9 a.m. so you arrive before the tour boats. Sundays are the busiest day.
Group tours from the Puerto Plata area run about 8 to 11 hours door to door and were listed from around $65 to $100 per person in 2026, typically with transport, boat, snorkel gear and lunch on the beach at La Ensenada; private boats cost more. From Punta Rucia you can hire a fishing boat directly at the beach or through your hotel. See the Cayo Arena boat trip page for the options.
There is no shade beyond the huts, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water, and carry out your trash. Sargassum can arrive in heavy seaweed years, mostly between April and September.
Best for: snorkelers, couples, families with confident swimmers, and photographers. Not for: anyone who hates crowds and can only go on a Sunday, or small children and pregnant travelers if the sea is rough on the crossing. Stay overnight at Punta Rucia Lodge to beat the day-trippers.
