Playa Paraíso

The quiet village beach of Paraíso, with river stones, turquoise water and simple fish restaurants

Playa Paraíso

About Playa Paraíso

Playa Paraíso is the beach in front of the village of Paraíso, about 40 minutes south of Barahona on the coast road, between San Rafael and Los Patos. It is a working, lived-in village beach: a few hundred meters of smooth river stones and dark sand, and water that turns an intense turquoise on a sunny day. It gets far fewer visitors than San Rafael and Los Patos, which is the main reason to stop.

The water looks inviting, but take it seriously. Like most of this coast the beach shelves quickly, and waves and current can be strong, especially when the swell comes up in the afternoon. Many days it is not a beach for weak swimmers. There are no lifeguards. Where the small freshwater stream meets the sea you will find locals cooling off. Wear water shoes for the stones.

Access is easy: the village sits right on the highway and you can park on the street or in the village for free. There is no entry fee. A few small beachfront restaurants serve fried or grilled fish, rice and beans and tostones at local prices, and a full meal with a drink can come in under $15. Bring cash; ATMs are scarce once you leave Barahona. Shade is decent near the trees and restaurants.

Paraíso is also the turn-off for the mountain road inland to Platón Ecolodge and the rivers of the Sierra de Bahoruco, so it makes a convenient lunch stop for people heading up there. Sargassum can arrive in some months (one 2026 visitor guide flags October as a higher-risk month), but it is less of an issue than on the east coast.

Best for: a quiet look at village life on the coast, a long lunch, photographers. Not for: families with small children who want shallow water, or anyone wanting beach chairs and bars. The best time is the morning, before the wind picks up, and the drier months from December to April. For a safer swim nearby, use the river pools at San Rafael or the river lagoon at Los Patos, both 10 to 15 minutes away. See our Paraíso neighborhood page for more on staying in the area.
