Paraíso
A small coastal town between the river beaches of San Rafael and Los Patos, with the mountains right behind
About Paraíso
Paraíso is a small municipality on the coast road about 40 minutes south of Barahona, and the natural middle point of the Barahona coast. Playa San Rafael and its river pools are about 10 minutes north, Playa Los Patos and its freshwater lagoon about 10 minutes south, and the town's own beach, Playa Paraíso, is right on the main street. Behind it, the Sierra de Bahoruco rises steeply, with rivers and coffee farms within an hour's drive.
This is a fishing and farming town, not a resort area. You will find colmados (corner stores), a few comedores (simple local restaurants) serving fish and rice, guaguas (minibuses) on the highway, and very little aimed at foreign tourists. That is the appeal for some people and a problem for others. Lodging is limited and mostly simple; the best-known place to stay nearby is Platón Ecolodge, up the mountain road inland from the coast, which runs river and hiking activities.
Why stay here instead of Barahona: you wake up next to the best river beaches on the coast, you can be at the lagoon in Los Patos before the weekend crowds, and you are about 1.5 to 2 hours closer to Pedernales for the drive south. The trade-off is fewer services: get cash and fuel in Barahona (the coast has few ATMs, and the last reliable gas before Pedernales is around Enriquillo, further south), and bring anything specific you need.
What a day looks like: a morning swim in the cold river at Los Patos, lunch at a beachfront comedor in Paraíso, the afternoon at the Balneario San Rafael pools, and the Mirador de San Rafael viewpoint in the late afternoon. Weekends are noticeably busier and louder than weekdays, as families from Barahona and beyond come down to the rivers.
Best for: travelers who want the river beaches on their doorstep, hikers heading inland, and anyone who likes small-town Dominican life. Not for: nightlife, beach bars or travelers who need English-speaking service. For the full route and how to split your nights between Barahona and Pedernales, read our road-trip guide.
