Hospital IMG
Punta Cana's newest major hospital, the first tertiary center in the Dominican Republic with North American (ACHC) accreditation
About Hospital IMG
Hospital IMG is the newest of the major Punta Cana hospitals and a meaningful upgrade in the area's medical infrastructure. In 2022, IMG became the first tertiary-level health center in the Dominican Republic to earn accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), a North American standards body. For travelers from the US, Canada, and Europe who care about accreditation as a quality signal, IMG offers a level of formal certification that the older Punta Cana hospitals (which operate to local DR standards) do not currently match.
The main facility on Boulevard Turístico del Este (corner of Cocotal, in front of CEPM) has 40 inpatient beds, modern operating theaters, an ICU, an emergency department, and the standard range of medical specialties. A second branch operates in Punta Cana Village at Boulevard 1ero de Noviembre, providing outpatient services closer to the airport-adjacent residential area. The smaller bed count compared to Centro Médico Punta Cana is offset by newer infrastructure and the ACHC quality standards.
Language capability is bilingual (Spanish and English) with multilingual support available. IMG maintains direct billing agreements with over 80 international insurance providers, which is significantly more than most regional hospitals. For travelers with major US, Canadian, or European insurance, the chances that IMG can bill the insurance directly (rather than requiring cash payment and reimbursement) are higher than at the older facilities.
IMG also runs a house-call doctor service (visita a domicilio) that brings a physician directly to the patient's resort or rental, reachable via WhatsApp or phone. For non-emergency situations like fever, gastroenteritis, ear infections, and minor allergic reactions, the house-call option is often more practical than going to a hospital.
Who should go here: travelers who specifically value North American accreditation, anyone with international insurance from a major US/Canadian/European provider (the direct billing improves the experience), travelers in the Punta Cana Village area (the branch is more accessible than the older facilities), and anyone wanting the newer infrastructure. Who should consider alternatives: travelers staying at Hospiten-affiliated resorts (the in-resort clinic shortcut works better at Hospiten), and travelers wanting the largest facility footprint (Centro Médico Punta Cana is bigger).
