About Cofresí Beach

Cofresí Beach (Playa Cofresí) is a small, curved bay about 10 to 15 minutes west of Puerto Plata city. It takes its name from Roberto Cofresí, the 19th-century Puerto Rican pirate whom local legend links to this coast. Today the area is defined by two things: the Lifestyle Holidays resort and timeshare complex that wraps around most of the bay, and the Ocean World Adventure Park marine park and marina at its western end.

The sand is light golden and the bay is more sheltered than Playa Dorada, so the water is often calm enough for easy swimming, with gentle entry. It still faces the open Atlantic, though, and winter north swells can bring waves, so check the flags. There is reasonable shade from palms and sea grape trees along the back of the beach. Snorkeling is modest.

Access is the complicated part. The sand is public by law, but the land behind most of the beach belongs to the resorts, and in 2017 the local neighborhood board publicly complained that public access had been restricted. In practice, most visitors here are resort guests, Ocean World visitors or people on excursions. Independent visitors can reach the public section, but expect a crowded patch of sand and persistent vendors selling everything from excursions to jewelry. Ask your driver to drop you at the public access rather than the resort gates.

Food and drinks come from the resorts (for guests) and from small vendors in the public section. Ocean World has its own restaurants. Sargassum can drift in during some summers; the resorts clean their frontage, while the public patch is less consistent.

Cruise traffic matters here too. Cofresí is only about 15 minutes from the Amber Cove terminal, and Ocean World is one of the most booked shore excursions, so the area is busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon on ship days.

Who it is best for: Lifestyle resort guests, families combining a beach morning with Ocean World, and travelers who want a calmer bay close to the city. Who it is not for: independent travelers looking for an easy, open public beach or a local scene. For that, Sosúa Beach is a better choice, and for a resort-style day Playa Dorada is about 20 minutes east. Best time: weekday mornings, and summer for the calmest water.
