Laguna Gri-Gri Boat Trip

A short, easy boat ride through mangrove tunnels and out to the coves of Río San Juan

Laguna Gri-Gri Boat Trip

About This Activity

The Laguna Gri-Gri is a mangrove lagoon on the edge of Río San Juan, and the boat trip through it is one of the most relaxed outings on the north coast. Small open boats leave from a dock at the end of town, carry you down a channel lined with thick mangroves, and out through the lagoon's mouth to the coast, where the scenery changes to rocky headlands, sea caves and small beaches.

A typical route takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The first part winds through the mangroves, where you can see herons, egrets, pelicans and other water birds, and the captains often slow down in the shade of the roots for photos. Next comes the Cueva de las Golondrinas (Swallow Cave), a sea cave where swallows nest, usually included in the standard trip. Then the boat heads out along the coast, where many trips stop at a cove or natural pool for a swim. Longer trips include a stop at a beach such as the area around Playa Caletón.

Prices are set by the local boat operators rather than big tour companies, so they are modest. Expect around $10 to $15 per person on a shared boat in 2026, or a fixed price for a private boat, which works out well for a group. Prices vary with group size and route, so agree on the price and the stops before you get in. Some day tours from Cabarete and Sosúa include the Gri-Gri as part of a Río San Juan excursion with lunch and a beach stop.

Timing: morning is the best time, when the water is calm, the light is soft and it is cooler in the mangroves. The ocean section depends on sea conditions; on rough days the captain may stay inside the lagoon or keep the coastal part short. Ask before you leave whether conditions allow swimming or snorkeling at the coves.

What to bring: sunscreen, a hat, water, a swimsuit if you want to swim, and cash in small bills for the trip and a tip. Bring a dry bag for your phone if there is any chance of spray.

Who it is best for: families with children of any age, older travelers, birders and anyone combining Río San Juan's sights in one day. Who it is not for: thrill seekers; it is a gentle scenic ride, not an adventure. Pair it with an afternoon at Playa Grande, 15 minutes east.
