Hospital Provincial Dr. Elio Fiallo

Hospital Provincial Dr. Elio Fiallo is the public hospital in Pedernales town and the closest emergency care to Cabo Rojo, La Cueva and Bahía de las Águilas. It is part of the national health service (SNS). For travelers it is the place to go first for an accident, a bad cut on the rocks, a jellyfish or sea urchin injury, heat exhaustion or a sudden illness while you are in the far south-west.

The current building opened in 2016 with 54 beds, three operating rooms, separate emergency areas for adults, children and obstetrics, a laboratory, a blood bank, X-ray, ultrasound and a pharmacy, according to press coverage at the time. Its own site lists inpatient care, general surgery, psychology and dentistry among its services. It is a provincial hospital, not a specialist center: serious cases are stabilized here and transferred to the Hospital Regional Jaime Mota in Barahona, about 2 to 2.5 hours away, or to Santo Domingo.

What to expect: staff speak Spanish, so have a translation app ready. Bring your passport. Public hospitals do not usually bill international travel insurance directly, so keep receipts and any reports for a claim later. Phone signal is weak at La Cueva and on the bay, so if something happens on the beach, ask your boat captain or the restaurant staff to help you get back to town quickly.
