Hoyo de Pelempito
A drive from the desert coast at Cabo Rojo up into pine forest, to a viewpoint over a vast mountain depression
About This Activity
The Hoyo de Pelempito is a huge depression in the Sierra de Bahoruco, ringed by forested ridges, and the viewpoint on its rim is one of the great mountain views in the Dominican Republic. One local guide describes the hole as roughly 700 meters deep. The trip there is half the experience: from the dry, cactus-covered coast at Cabo Rojo, the road climbs through coastal scrub, then pine forest and cooler highland forest, to an observation deck at about 1,165 to 1,200 meters. You go from sea-level heat to jacket weather in under two hours.
Getting there: the route follows the old Cabo Rojo to Aceitillar road, inland from the bauxite area near Cabo Rojo. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours each way from the Cabo Rojo and Pedernales area, more if you stop. The road is unpaved in parts and poorly signed, and the last stretch, about 7 km after the ranger post, is rough enough that a 4x4 with good clearance is strongly advised. After heavy rain it can be impassable, so ask locally before you set out. If you do not have a suitable vehicle, hotels in Pedernales can arrange a local guide with a truck; one 2026 guide quotes around RD$1,500 to RD$2,000 for a guide.
Fees and facilities: sources disagree. Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco lists a park fee of around RD$100 per person, while one recent visitor guide says there is no formal fee at the Hoyo beyond a small parking charge. Carry small peso notes either way. There is little or nothing for sale at the top: bring water, snacks, sun protection and a warm layer. Cell signal is patchy to absent.
What you will see: the view down into the hole and across the ridges, pine forest that looks nothing like the coast below, and good birding. The Sierra de Bahoruco is one of the island's key areas for endemic birds, including the white-winged warbler and the Hispaniolan crossbill. Go early in the morning for the clearest views, before clouds build over the mountains.
Best for: road-trippers, birders, photographers and anyone wanting a break from the heat. Not for: travelers in a standard rental car on a wet day, or those short on time. Combine it with an afternoon at Playa Cabo Rojo on the way down. Base: Pedernales.
